Car meets truck... (Creating business for car insurance adjusters.)
Car insurance, also called auto insurance, is insurance car owners can buy for their cars. Typically it is required by state or other governmental licensing regulations, and such regulations typically set coverage minimums required for compliance. Generally speaking, car insurance protects against financial losses in cases of auto accidents. These financial risks can be substantial, involving damage to the cars involved, and medical expenses.
The coverage options include: property damage, which includes damage to your own car; theft protection – compensation for a stolen car; liability coverage, which covers third party expenses, like damage to the third party's vehicle, medical expenses and other losses like damage to street signs or other property; medical expenses – for treatment of your own injuries. Typically laws require some kind of basic coverage that includes all or some of these insurance options. A deductible amount is the amount the car owner must pay, and the balance is paid by the insurance carrier. So in return for paying the premiums, the car insurance company provides the selected policy coverage.

Sometimes the car insurance company may declare the car to be totaled, i.e. beyond repair. In such cases, the car insurance will cover the remaining value of the car, depreciated for age. Sometimes the car owner may have replacement value insurance, which covers up to the replacement value if there is a difference.
Various factors are taken into account in setting the car insurance cost, i.e. the premiums. These factors include:
- Value of the insured car
- Age of the insured car
- Safety features in the insured car
- Length of owner's commute
- Location - some areas have higher car theft rates or lower recovery rates
- Driver's safety record - a lot of accidents means higher auto insurance premiums
- Age of driver - younger drivers often have higher premiums
- Gender - men have higher accident rates than women meaning higher premiums - proving the stereotype that women are worse drivers incorrect!
